Instagram’s new “Your Algorithm” tool lets users view, edit, and add interests that shape their Reels feed

Instagram is rolling out a new feature that gives users unprecedented insight into how their feed is shaped—and lets them adjust it directly. The tool, called ‘Your Algorithm,’ allows users to view the themes influencing their Reels suggestions and refine them for a more personalised experience.

When browsing Reels, a new icon—two lines with hearts—will appear in the upper right corner. Tapping it opens the ‘Your Algorithm’ panel, where you can see the subjects Instagram believes matter most to you. The platform notes these interest summaries are generated based on your activity and interpreted using AI.

Personalising the Instagram Experience

Your personalised summary might read something like: “Recently you’ve engaged with creativity, sports hype, fitness motivation, and skateboarding.” Users can even share this overview to their Stories, similar to how people post their Spotify Wrapped insights.

Below this description is a detailed list of topics Instagram has identified as relevant to your browsing habits. You can indicate which ones you would like to see more or less frequently, and the system will recalibrate your recommendations accordingly. If a category you care about is missing, you can manually add it to your interests to further fine-tune your feed.

The update echoes TikTok’s ‘Manage Topics’ feature introduced last year, which lets users influence their ‘For You’ feed by adjusting exposure to broad content categories. While both aim to improve content relevance, Instagram’s approach differs by offering individualised topic lists and the flexibility to add new ones.

The feature launches in the US starting Wednesday and will expand globally in English in the near future.

Instagram also shared that this customisation tool will eventually extend beyond Reels. Soon, users will be able to tailor their Explore feed using the same mechanism, with plans to integrate the feature into more sections of the app over time.
